Battle Lake, MN Population 747

"The Little City with the Big Heart"

Battle Lake is located approximately 20 miles east of Fergus Falls on the intersection of Highway 210 and Highway 78 along the western shore of West Battle Lake.

Battle Lake got its name from a battle fought between the Ojibwa and Sioux people around 1795. The Indians often visited Battle Lake, setting up their summer camp in the area. When the railroad came through in October of 1882 the town started to grow. Excursion trains brought in tourists looking for a place of summer fun, fishing and swimming. Some of the wealthy tourists built summer homes and returned to Battle Lake each year.

Today Battle Lake has a total area of 1.2 square miles. Three miles of West Battle Lake shoreline are within the city limits and it borders Glendalough State Park. Battle Lake is home to quaint shops and Arts and Crafts shows, but still offers a modern school, pre-school to 12, with up-to-date technology.
Like the days of old, Battle Lake is still well know for summer fun, but now includes winter activities utilizing the great outdoor surrounding area. Battle Lake itself has four parks - Sandbay Park, Railroad Park, Halvorson Park and Lions Park which offers a shelter. The city has a public dock and fishing pier (pictured at right) on West Battle Lake and a public beach on Lake Shore Drive. West Battle Lake has a lake area of 5624 acres which is home to Black Crappie, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Rock Bass, Perch and, of course, Walleye. The Battle Lake Lions Club hosts an Annual West Battle Lake Fishing Tournament each June.
