"Home of the Otters"

Fergus Falls is located just off Interstate 94 along Highway 210 in western Ottertail County. The site for Fergus Falls was chosen by James Whitford because of the river and waterfall. He named the city after his employer, James Fergus. Fergus Falls is the Ottertail County seat. With a lumber mill built along the river and then the arrival of the railroad, Fergus Falls has continued to grow and prosper. One set back was the cyclone of 1919 that destroyed a portion of the city and took several lives.

Major industries of Fergus Falls continue to be agriculture, as it is located along the edge of the Red River Valley, and Tourism, as it is on the edge of the Ottertail County Lakes Country. In addition, Fergus Falls offers many employment opportunities in manufacturing, service, retail, medical and construction fields.
