"Nestled Among the Lakes" Ottertail City is located on the intersection of County 78 and County 108 along the east side of Ottertail Lake. The name "Ottertail" came from the days when waterways (rivers and lakes) were the best form of transportation as no roads yet existed. Ottertail's history is a story of bad luck. Once set to become the county seat and headquarters of the Northern Pacific Railway, it hosted five hotels, a weekly newspaper, 27 saloons and a jail. When the railroad moved to Perham, Ottertail was never incorporated so the city does not officially exist. Today Ottertail City booms in the summer time. Nestled between numerous lakes including Ottertail Lake, Pelican Lake, Buchanan Lake, Rush Lake, Portage Lake, West Leaf Lake, Grass Lake, Gourd Lake, Long Lake, Pickerel Lake and Round Lake, the population listed at 451 grows to over 1000 residents in the summertime. |
