"Small Town with a Big Heart"

Underwood is located on the Intersection of Highway 210 and County 35 in Ottertail County. and was homesteaded in 1869. When the railroad arrived, they called the town Underwood Southvick. The original post office was Turtle Lake Post Office. Later both were changed to Underwood.

Underwood has a variety of businesses including Farmers State Bank, Underwood Quik Stop, Farm House Cafe, JK Sports, Outdoor Renovations and Underwood Municipal Liquor Store.

Fort Juelson was constructed for protection near Underwood after the Battle at the Little Big Horn. Although never used, the fort was 120' x 100' and the walls were 4'x4' thick.

Underwood offers pre-school through 12 at Independent School District #550. In addition to academics, Underwood school offers many extracurricular activities such as athletics, band, choir, speech and drama.

Points of Interest:

The Foss Log Cabin was constructed by Ole and Anne Foss, the original settlers in Underwood. The cabin has been restored and is still on its original site in Underwood.

Each Labor Day weekend, Underwood celebrates their Fall Festival. The celebration includes a large parade, Foss Log Cabin Run, kiddie parade, little tractor pull, craft show and Underwood Boy Scout breakfast.

Phelps Mill along the Otter Tail River was built in 1889 approximately 10 miles north of Underwood. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The yearly Phelps Mill Festival has become a favorite of Underwood and the surrounding area for residents and tourists alike. It takes place on the 2nd weekend in July.

Centennial Park is located along the main street of Underwood and offers a picnic shelter, playground equipment and a caboose to commemorate the railroad that ran through Underwood.
