"Doorway To The Lakes" Vining is located in Ottertail County at the intersection of State Highway 210 and County 40. Vining was a mostly Norwegian village of about 225 people with the Northern Pacific Railroad running through it. In its hay day, Vining had a bank, hotel, creamery and the major industry was grain. Due to the surrounding lakes, Vining's current population of 68 grows in the summertime . What was once the Vining Village School is now the Vining Community Center. Vining is also proud of their Volunteer Fire Department including its First Response Team. |
Children
from Vining attend school in Henning.
Independent School District #545 offers education for K-12 and many
extracurricular activities. The school motto is "Helping Each Child
Succeed".Scattered around town you'll find Outdoor Sculptures by Ken Nyberg, a descendent of Vining Village settlers. Vining welcomes you to tour the city and not just the main drag to see all of the sculptures.
Each summer on the 3rd weekend in August, Vining is home to "The Biggest Small Town Celebration in Ottertail County" - Watermelon Days. Vining says they play host to 3,000-4,000 people each year. Festivities include a parade, street dance, children's games & petting zoo, food vendors, arts & crafts vendors and, of course, watermelon. There are "great" Minnesota lakes just a few miles from Vining Stuart Lake, East Battle Lake, Ellingson Lake and Siverson Lake to name a few.
